According to the Financial Times, the speed at which women are being promoted to the boards of the UK’s largest companies has slowed for the first time.

The stats show that women made up 29 per cent of hires to UK boards last year, which is significantly down on the 32.1% recorded in 2014 and the 31.6% figure from 2012.

These figures are also much lower than Western Europe where the average figure is 35.4% and well behind France which has a figure closer to 57%. Growth in the US has also stagnated but has still grown by 1% since 2012.

These findings echo the fears from UK diversity in the workplace supporters that the momentum of promoting women into senior roles has slackened.

Why is this important?

An initial goal was set of filling a quarter of FTSE 100 board places with women by 2015. Now the women on boards review is hoping that a third of board positions at Britain’s largest public companies be made up by Women by the year 2020.

Yet this target seems way off now as the board appointments figure is now below the level of 2011 when these targets were set and females on the executive committee has flatlined.
